Religion versus spirituality — what’s the difference? While it depends on who you are, where you come from, and how you were raised, religion can be loosely defined as a set of beliefs or principles you follow and practice in your everyday life. On the other hand, spirituality is more fluid — it’s your connection with your Spirit, Soul, and purpose in life. It’s your awareness of yourself and the lives around you. It’s the belief that everything in your life begins with you. You hold the keys to your future and potential, and when you’re connected with your spirituality, it’s as if nothing can come between you and your life’s purpose.

For some people, spirituality comes naturally. For others, it takes time to reconnect with your Inner Being — the soul that has been quietly waiting for you to awaken to your Higher Self. At its core, spirituality is a unique experience for everyone. There is no definitive way to practice it — you simply have to learn what spirituality means for you as a constantly growing and evolving individual.

While spirituality covers a broad spectrum of life experiences and knowledge, there are a few key ways you can bring more of it into your life. It’s an individualized experience, and no one can truly awaken your spiritual side besides you. These four tips can help guide you as you navigate this exciting new chapter.

Tip #1: Expand Your Perspective

There are countless spiritual-based books out there; you just have to find the authors and titles that resonate the most with you. A good rule of thumb is to focus on the aspects of spirituality that you’re most drawn to, such as self-empowerment and life fulfillment. By pinpointing the areas you’re most passionate about, the Universe is able to send you the literature that best aligns with your unique spiritual journey. Instead of ordering books online, see if there’s a bookstore nearby that carries spiritual titles. You never know who you might meet along the way; they could very well be on a similar spiritual journey.

Tip #2: Broaden Your Spiritual Circle

When searching for more spirituality, your environment — such as the people you spend time with — can greatly impact your perspective of the world. Engage on social media, attend events, and explore the world to meet the people most beneficial to your spiritual journey. The Universe will send you the people you need, but you first have to put yourself out there so they can meet you.

If your city doesn’t offer many events, consider going on a retreat that offers practical tips for you to strengthen your connection with the Universe. Even if you only go on one retreat a year, you’ll still be gaining more insight and knowledge than if you spent the majority of your time in your hometown.

Tip #3: Upgrade Your Health and Lifestyle

Cleaner, healthier food can help open your mind and widen your perspective of the world. Your gut affects many aspects of your health, including your mental clarity and awareness. By adopting a more sustainable, healthier diet, you’re providing your body with the nutrients it needs to open up your pineal gland (Third Eye), thus broadening your spiritual capacity. Similarly, exercising your body and tending to any lingering health issues will clear your mind and body, in turn strengthening your ability to connect with Spirit. Yoga is a great way to clear your mind, calm your anxiety, and reconnect with your Higher Self.

For those with ongoing health issues, consult with a naturopathic doctor who can prescribe natural and non-invasive medicine that will help promote self-healing.

Tip #4: Consult with a Spiritual Coach

It can be difficult to navigate this journey all on your own. Spiritual coaches serve as your dedicated guide as you determine — and explore — what spirituality means to you. From helping you redirect your life to uncovering your innermost desires, a spiritual coach’s holistic approach could be the bridge you need to live a more spiritual life. While there are many spiritual coaches out there, it’s important to find someone who is not only credible, but also relatable. Therefore, when searching for a spiritual coach, don’t pressure yourself to commit to someone right away. Instead, take your time to interview your best options to see which person resonates the most with you. Oftentimes, seeing what else is out there will show you what exactly it is that you’re looking for, and ultimately needing in your life.
