The number of gyms and fitness studios in Muscat has seen a healthy spike of late. While all of this variety is certainly welcome, it can also lead to choice paralysis: with so many great options to choose from, where do you even begin? Well, we’re here to help you make that call.

OneMore Fitness

In just under a year, OneMore Fitness has developed a reputation for excellence. It’s a fully homegrown concept created by young Omani brothers Al Wadah Al Hasani and Al Moataz Al Hasani with a clear focus on functional fitness and CrossFit. Members get to enjoy the gym’s state-of-the-art facilities in Ghala, including Assault AirRunners and curve motor-less treadmills.

The interiors are by far the most appealing of all the gyms we’ve tried so far, with a cool, industrial blend of grays, shot through with the occasional bright pink and blue accent.

The gym boasts a spacious mixed section, ladies-only section, and a heated indoor swimming pool and jacuzzi. There’s a supplement store on site as well, which sells healthy protein snacks, vitamins, and more, and a small café set to open soon.

The classes here tend to run on the smaller side, combining a tight-knit community feel with personalized focus on members’ form and technique.

Bonus for gym-going moms: Even if your kids aren’t old enough to take part in the kid classes, the ladies-only section also has a play area, where your little ones can draw pictures of mommy sweating up a storm.

F45

Are you desperate to join a workout community but feel intimidated by the thought? F45, with its “no treadmills, no mirrors, no egos” slogan, might just be your answer.

This Australian franchise opened up about a year ago and has garnered something of a cult following (not an exaggeration). Naturally, Goodness had to go see what all the hype was about, and we’re glad to report that they certainly lived up to it. Managers Joe and Lizzy run a bright and cheerful ship, but don’t be fooled by their friendly smiles; they will train you hard.

F45 runs a classes-only gym, and the formula has been a huge success in Muscat. The classes are split between cardio and resistance training, and they all have intriguing names like ‘Tokyo Disco’ and ‘Angry Bird’.  ‘Hollywood’, which combines both cardio and resistance, is F45’s signature class. “You’ll never forget your first Hollywood,” insists Lizzy, and we’re inclined to believe her.

The current flagship branch in town is located at Salam Square in Al Khuwair, and they’re gearing up to open a second branch in Muzn Mall.

Bonus: When you become a member, you can download the F45 application, which also comes with a whole archive of recipes that will help fuel your next workout.

The Wellness Centre

This unassuming space is an understated favorite. The Wellness Centre (TWC) offers a huge main area with all the conventional fitness equipment you could imagine. The space is flanked by three studios: the group exercise studio, the mind and body studio, and the cycling studio.

If you’re up for a unique challenge that you won’t find anywhere else in town, try out the ‘Queenax’ class, which combines functional training and suspension training (monkey bars) to full effect. Another exclusive TWC class is the trippy ‘Prama Energy’ class, a circuit training class that uses neon lights and music to guide you into a groovy sweat.

Also available on site is an infrared sauna, which offers the added benefit of stimulating the production of collagen in your skin. Some of the other frills that you can take advantage of include sports massages and NormaTec PULSE Recovery equipment to help you recover faster between training sessions.

UFC Gym

Honest truth: From the outside looking in, UFC Gym seems intimidating. It’s decked out with fighting equipment and its own sparring ring and complete with fighting men who may or may not leave their class with a bloody nose. But if you scratch the surface, you’ll find something different, and that’s a community that will help you do what their slogan promises: train different.

The US franchise has developed a strong community here in Muscat. The small classes are usually filled with members egging each other on and sweating little puddles (ok, really big puddles). Although the focus is on martial arts and fighting, you’ll also find other classes like power flow yoga, cycling, and step aerobics.

One of UFC Gym’s signature classes is the D.U.T. (daily ultimate training), a HIIT workout that changes every day so you’ll always be on your toes. You might also want to try out the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes as this is one of the only gyms in Oman where this discipline is available.

Trainers and members often participate in regional and international tournaments, so you can take your gym loyalty to the next level by cheering them on ring-side.
