Cited as the most common cancer among women, breast cancer affects our mothers, sisters, daughters, and friends. Whether you yourself have been diagnosed at some point in your life or have witnessed a loved one go through it, its impact ranges far beyond treatment and remission.
According to the United Arab Emirates University, breast cancer is the most common type of malignancy in the UAE, “with more than 65 percent of women diagnosed at an advanced stage”. While routine screening has helped with early detection, over 70 percent of breast tumors are self-detected.
In 2014, a study was conducted to test breast cancer screening awareness, knowledge, and practices among Arab women in the UAE. The results were shocking. Nearly 45 percent of women had never had a Clinical Breast Exam (CBE), while approximately 44 percent of women (who had never had a mammogram) were unaware of important screening techniques. This October, show your support, help raise awareness, and get educated about this cause by attending one of the events happening around the UAE.
