Anxiety has become a ubiquitous part of modern living, affecting people both young and old. According to Gulf News, approximately 20 percent of people in the UAE suffer from an anxiety disorder, including General Anxiety Disorder (GAD), panic disorders, and social phobias. These can create feelings of worry, uneasiness, and nervousness, causing an individual to feel both helpless and hopeless. Whether you’ve recently moved away from your family, quit your job, or separated from your spouse, there are a variety of situations and circumstances that can spark feelings of anxiety.

Fortunately, 90 percent of people who get help from a psychiatrist “bounce back to good mental health,” according to the same Gulf News article. Enter: The LightHouse, a mental health and wellness clinic in Dubai founded by clinical psychologists Dr. Saliha Afridi and Dr. Tara Wyne with the goal of helping children, adults, couples, and families overcome mental health hurdles through evidence-based practices.

As of fall 2019, the clinic is now offering a new anxiety management therapy group (AMTG) catered towards anxiety sufferers who are looking for a more affordable alternative to one-on-one therapy. “We have always operated from the basis of ‘what does our community need?’ and, right now, the answer to that question is evidence-based treatment for anxiety in the form of group therapy,” says Dr. Afridi, clinical psychologist and managing director of The LightHouse.

Led by a licensed, senior clinician and open to anyone over the age of 21, the AMTG has eight seats available per session and is offered two times a week for six weeks. Participants will learn about the development of anxiety, as well as its physiology. Throughout each AMTG session, practical skills and shared group discussions will provide participants with a unique therapeutic experience that connects each individual on a deep, authentic level. Group settings offer multiple perspectives, as well as support, encouragement, and feedback in a safe — and confidential — space.

The LightHouse’s AMTG removes barriers of entry to therapy by providing affordable services that are more accessible than in-demand clinicians who offer one-on-one sessions, meaning your wait time to receiving quality mental health services can be drastically reduced. In addition to the AMTG, The LightHouse also offers a variety of free support groups, including a grief support group, a stress support group, and an infertility support group.

If you’re interested in participating in The LightHouse’s AMTG, e-mail or call (+971) 4 380 2088 to schedule an initial phone consultation.
