Barre classes have become increasingly popular over the past few years, especially since Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman revealed that practicing ballet whipped them into shape for Black Swan. The likes of Madonna, Karlie Kloss, and Miranda Kerr are fans.
Incorporating Pilates, yoga, ballet, and dance methods, barre offers a full-body workout focusing on high repetitions and isometric movements, which involve holding your body in a position, either completely still or with tiny pulses, to strengthen both the bigger muscles and the smaller ones that support them. You’ll hear the words “and… hold” a lot.
This technique brings a whole new meaning to the expression “feel the burn” and helps create that long, lean look without the risk of bulking up. You’ll use a ballet barre, dumbbells, rubber bands, and balls. Strengthening is also achieved by using just your own body weight, but don’t worry; you won’t be asked to dance or wrap your legs around your head, which is always a bonus.
“I love teaching barre and watching clients become stronger with each class. The method never gets easier, but it’s a true pleasure to see them develop and challenge themselves throughout the training process to achieve their desired results,” says instructor Lianna Brice of Define. On that motivational note, check out Goodness’ favorite barre classes in Dubai and get ballet beautiful in no time.
One of our favorite workout spots in Dubai, Define is the definitive place for a seriously ramped-up barre sesh. With booming music, a cardio warm-up that will leave you sweating after a few minutes (planks and knee lifts aplenty), and energetic instructors who won’t let you give up, it’s guaranteed to get your heart racing and your muscles burning. You’ll leave sweaty and sore but feeling seriously good. Inner-thigh burn to Beyoncé and tricep dips to Drake? Only at Define.

A Dubai workout institution, celebrity-favorite Physique 57 has two outlets and offers some of the best barre classes in town. But be warned: it’s tough. The warm-up alone uses a minimum of 5kg dumbbells to sculpt your arms and banish those bingo wings, leaving you burning before you’ve even started the main workout. Upbeat dance music pushes you through those endless inner-thigh pulses and leg raises, and there’s lots of stretching in between to give you a few minutes of rest, which you’ll be thankful for – trust us!

Whether you book in for a regular barre class or the harder-intensity ‘FlyBarre Warrior’ cardio class, you’re guaranteed to feel the burn and work up a real sweat at FlyBarre. It’s a great standalone full-body blitz, but you can also think of it as the perfect workout to compliment your FlyWheel spinning sessions. This fun (we promise) routine works your body from top to toe and features loud tunes and fierce but friendly trainers.

This is the best barre class if you want a lower-intensity workout. The stunning Real Pilates studio in JLT is also the perfect place to practice it – light, airy, and so pretty that you might even forget you came here to exercise. The regular barre classes tone and strengthen, getting your muscles fired up but with very little cardio involved – ideal if you’re seeking a slower pace. For a harder class, however, book in for the ‘Barre Stick’ session that uses specialized apparatus to up the ante.
