The fitness world is constantly evolving, with more and more fun and quirky workout trends hitting the mainstream market. Twerking classes, anyone? Yes, it’s a thing. But when it comes to the wonderful world of yoga, there are now numerous ways of reaping its rewards whilst keeping things fresh and fun – without being stuck in a studio. Goodness tapped the fitness experts at Sun & Sand Sports to find out their top three recommendations for getting creative with yoga. Read on to find out more and get inspired to get your “om” on.

Your Outdoor Zen

Yoga is all about breathing and feeling at one with your body, so what better way to practice than by enjoying the outdoors and the beauty of nature? The outdoor yoga scene is really flourishing in the UAE, with many Vinyasa classes taking place in parks and on beaches, particularly now that the weather is so great. For an all-round yoga workout, try a 30-minute Ashtanga session for a full-body series of continuous poses, which help to achieve control, awareness, and relaxation – a really holistic approach to yoga and low-impact fitness.

Try it at: South Lawn, The Beach opposite JBR. You can get your downward dog on for free every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. All you need to bring is a mat and towel, and you can enjoy the outdoor yoga session that is open to all levels.

Hit the Water

As a new style of workout, Paddleboard yoga is fast becoming one of the favorites for yogis in the region. The sea vibes and mellow waters add to the whole yoga experience, particularly a more relaxed and meditative form of yoga – such as Hatha – as you really take in the feeling of your surroundings. The added challenge of stabilizing the board will vastly help to improve your balance and core stability, empowering your whole body and mind as you work out.

Try it at: Super SUP Fit at The Doubletree by Hilton on JBR, which specializes in both yoga and Pilates. You’ll float out to sea on a SUP board and get strong in the sunshine —win-win.

Defy Gravity

Swing into a new form of yoga that finds its foundations – or lack thereof – in aerial gymnastics. Swing yoga, also known as Aerial yoga, comprises a mix of dance and Pilates techniques that have been added to your classic yoga postures. A hammock is used as a balancing seat, making it both a relaxing and powerful sport, not to mention a whole lot of fun – particularly when you go with friends!

Try it at: Define in Dubai Marina. The ‘Mind’ classes offer a whole new perspective to yoga and, well, your morning view because you’ll spend most of your time hanging upside down in a yoga sling.
